TUTORIAL INFO

WHAT KIND OF TUITION DO I OFFER?

I teach students Mathematics, Statistics, Physics and Chemistry (in English only).  I teach personally on a one-to-one basis.  I don’t do on-line tuition because I don’t believe that it is as effective for mathematical subjects where it is important to see the thought process of the student.  Most of my students are Middle and High School students – occasionally University students.  The lessons are either at the student’s home, at a coffee shop or at a School study room.  I teach all over the Tokyo and Yokohama areas.  Lessons can be booked one at a time (i.e. you don’t have to book a month in advance for example).  Payment is due at the end of each lesson.  The arrangement must be with the parent’s agreement for students of 19 years of age or under.  Cancellations require 24 hours’ notice or the full fee is payable.

WHY HAVE ONE-TO-ONE TUITION?

  1. You learn at your own pace, asking whatever you want.  This is particularly important when learning Mathematics which continually builds on itself.  You must understand the early work thoroughly or you won’t understand the later stuff.

  2. It saves you time.  Having someone spot what you don’t understand and give you an explanation is so much faster than investigating it yourself. This leaves you more time for the subjects you prefer – or for those other activities you like!

  3. Having a regular tutorial reinforces what you’ve learnt at school and reminds you weekly of earlier stuff.  This makes it easier to revise for those end-of-semester/term exams.

WHY CHOOSE TO HAVE TUTION WITH ME?

  1.  I have a lot of experience.  This means that I can quickly identify the source of your difficulties because I’ve probably seen your problems before in other students.

  2. I know the subject matter thoroughly.  I’m good at explaining it and you’ll find that I’m patient if you don’t understand it all first time.

  3. I’ll help you to learn how to know when you are really ready for your tests, how to check answers by quickly estimating solutions and how best to work during your exams.  Students often find that this helps with their other subjects too.

  4. My view is that a student should be encouraged to work in a way that is natural for them.  If that way is not effective, the student begins to realise this themselves and begins to change for their own reasons. This encourages them to take control of their own studies instead of working because they are told to by parents and teachers.  This is part of changing from child to adult.

WHAT DO I TEACH?

Basically, I teach all levels of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Statistics. The vast majority of my students are aged 14 to 18 years and I don’t usually take students under 13 years of age.  In London I had extensive experience of teaching GCSE, AS and A-Level.  Since coming to Tokyo 10 years ago I have been teaching AP and IB students.  Many of my students do not have English as their first language so I help them with that (I have a TESOL qualification).  I’m familiar with the American system which takes students through Geometry, Algebra I & II, Pre-Calculus and Calculus.  I also help students prepare for the SAT, SSAT, GMAT and similar exams and have had some students for the EJU exam for Japanese universities.
